Pre-Race Routine and Warm-Up:
I didn’t do too much, had a bowl of oatmeal and coffee before I left the house. I had coffee on the way and a Tiger Milk bar 30 minutes before the race. For warm-ups, I stretched for 10 minutes or so, I also walked for 10 minutes.

Run #1

33:51 | 5K | 10m 54s  min/mile

Performance Comments:
I was cautious with this race; this was the first multi-event race since my knee surgery. I’ve been struggling with running some days and other day’s I ask myself why did I have the surgery? But this race was different. On the first run I connected with 3 other athletes, we talked and kept a good pace during the run.

Bike

38:16 | 10 miles | 15.7 mph

Performance Comments:
The bike was tough due to the wind. I wanted to stay in the 18 to 20 mph range, the first couple of miles I was hitting that goal but then I hit the headwind. I struggled through 4 miles of wind, at the turnaround I thought I’d make up ground. I did for a mile or so, but the wind changed direction and I was fighting a head wind for the remainder of the ride. I thought I did ok, but looking at the results I think I did well, 97th out of 352 with an average speed of 15.7. I was having a little pain from my right hamstring, I didn’t push harder because I didn’t want to have issues with the next run.

Run

34:56 | 5K | 11m 15s  min/mile

Performance Comments:
The second run was tough. The first half mile my legs felt like concrete. I spotted another runner; throughout the run I tried to gain ground on her. I did pick up some ground, but didn’t pass her. Overall I was very pleased with my performance. Last year my knee and sciatica sidelined me for several events. This race I felt good and didn’t have any big issues. I’m looking forward to training harder for the upcoming races.

What Would You Do Different?
Besides train more, I think the only thing I’d do different would be to have a Tiger Milk bar or energy gel mid way through the bike. I had them with me, but I just didn’t feel like I needed them. I think I was too focused on keeping a good pace.

Post Race Activities and Cool Down:
Nothing special, I had a banana, water, and walked around for a few minutes, changed cloths, than wife and I ran our household errands. I felt good that I did the race and felt good throughout the day.

Event Comments:
I liked the race; it was low key, fun, a good way to clear the winter cob webs. The organizer did a good job. Picking up the race packet was easy. At the race they were professional, courteous, helpful, overall a nice group of people. Parking was easy and there was professional staff on hand if you needed repairs with your bike. I’ll be back next year. Maybe it will be a little warmer.

Would You Do This Race Again?
Yes. I’ll be back, as the Terminator would say.
