Florida 70.3 Ironman Tri
05-24-2009
Lake Buena Vista, FL
88 and humid!
Overall Rank = 482/2151
Age Group = M50-54
Age Group Rank =22/104

Pre-Race Routine and Warm-Up:
Early rise to do a little prerace food nutrition. Tried to stay relaxed and confident, even knowing the weather was going to get HOT!

Swim

42:30 | 1.2 miles | 2:00 min/100 yds

Performance Comments:
Not good! About the second stroke and the first breath to the left side I found out that I had broken a right side rib on the trip down to Florida. A little Motor Home repair on the way down turned out to be my downfall to my race.

What Would You Do Different?
I guess if I would have known ahead of time that my rib was broken and that it was going to hurt that much, I would have taped it up and still done the race. It is an Ironman race!

T1

3:38

Performance Comments:
Not to bad. Thought it went pretty good considering that I had not practiced a t-1 since last November. Had clipped my shoes in and did the rubber band trick to hold the shoes flat.

What Would You Do Different?
Practice a few T-1s before the race to feel a little more comfortable going into it.

Bike

2:34:54 | 56K | 21.6 mph

Performance Comments:
Had a great bike ride going until I hit the 40 mile mark when the ride was coming straight at you. That lasted till the 50 mile mark where we turned the corn and had it to our side. Still had a 21.69 mph average pace

What Would You Do Different?
First I should have worked more in training on the leg strength, second I actually should have slowed a little to save more for the run. Didn't really feel that bad in the beginning of the run but at the end I think the push on the bike took its toll.

T2

2:12

Performance Comments:
Came to the dismount line fast seeing a hole open to jump off the bike and go, but of coarse at the last second it closed up almost taking me out of the race. A close crash! Other than that once into the transition area I got into my running gear pretty fast.

What Would You Do Different?
Will be a little more cautious coming to the dismount line the next time. A few seconds saved in not worth taking the chance of going out of the race.

Run

2:00:27 | 13.1 miles | 9:11 min/mi

Performance Comments:
Was doing good till about the 7 mile mark (even with a broken rib) when I went into zone 5 on the heart rate! Then the core temperature climbed and the brain started to play games on me.

What Would You Do Different?
Stick to the game plan! I did not do my gels every 30 minutes like I practiced and knew that I needed to. I think that it was the heat and the thought of having to get a gel down that I didn't do them. By the end I had a total glycogen depletion.

Post Race Activities and Cool Down:
Crossed the finish line and all I wanted was water to pour on myself! I was melting from the inside out I felt! Then the big mistake came, I walked down to the lake and laid in the water to cool off before I had walked off the lactic acid in the muscles. Major right calf cramp! Thank goodness for a fellow athlete and Ali that were able to massage it out for me. It took 4 days for the bruised calf muscle to not hurt to the touch.

Event Comments:
What do you say about the Florida 70.3, two words, Hot & Humid! Will I be back to do it again next year? We will have to see how the training goes next winter. I do know I learned a few things from this race. One, be careful before a big race! A broken rib is no fun in a swim or in a run. Second, stick to your game plan, hydration-nutrition.

Would You Do This Race Again?
I said no after the first time! More than likely yes.
