Lake Macatawa Triathlon
06-13-2009
Holland, MI
64 degrees, rain
Overall Rank = 51 / 116
Age Group = M45-49
Age Group Rank =8 /13

Pre-Race Routine and Warm-Up:
Much less coffee, more water this time which helped. Jogged about half mile, rode for about 5 minutes. I jumped in the water as the wave ahead of me was in the pen.

Swim

18:39| 800 yards | 2.19 min/yard

Performance Comments:
Beach start. I still have a very hard time settling into a rhythm. Very frustrating and I just need to mentally focus to make it happen. At about 400 yards I was finally swimming steady and in rhythm. I tried drafting for the first time ever . . I was harder than I guessed it would be because you need to go the same speed. I swam all the way until my hands hit bottom. The non-rhythm start probably cost me my 2 minutes. Last 400 was great.

What Would You Do Different?
Good plan. probably nothing. I just need to get better. I think I'll start training at the Lake instead of the pool to practice settling in.

What Would You Do Different?
I set a watch next to my running shoes. To save time, I carried it for awhile instead of wasting time putting it on in transition. I remembered I was carrying it about half-mile into the run. I then I never really looked at it. I think I'll skip the watch and just go by feel.

Run

34:23| 4.8 miles | 7:09 min/mi

Performance Comments:
Ali your awesome! I ran 9:40's last year! Walked to drink water, as always.

What Would You Do Different?
No change, but I think I can go faster and hold it. I stay at a comfortable pace because I don't have enough experience to know if I can hold a faster pace.

Post Race Activities and Cool Down:
quick fruit, etc., then jogged about one mile.

Event Comments:
Need a buddy! This one was completely solo, didn't know anyone. Still fun. Ali has turned me into a competitor, looking to pass people. No more entering to finish. 17 minutes faster than last year! Good job Coach.

Would You Do This Race Again?
Yes
