Pre-Race Routine and Warm-Up: Woke up early and excited. Arrived at transition area early and was set up with plenty of time. Stretched slightly and walked a mile down the shore to the swim start. Got to see the pros hit the water and was the 13th wave so plenty of time to wait.

Swim
35:56 | 1.2 mi | 1:53 min/100 m |

Performance Comments: I was happy with the swim. Went off course a few times and could have swam harder but finally felt great in the water. First race I didn't feel like swimming was my weak link. (TX Coach)

What Would You Do Different? Train a little more in open water to practice spotting and swimming straight lines in open water.

Performance Comments: It went smooth, had some trouble with gear placement. My bike was easy to spot and it felt like I was in and out quick.
What Would You Do Different? Ensure my Garmin is charged, I found out it must have been left on and was dead. This caused some extra time in transition as my dad tossed his to me to use. (I know its against the rules but only if you are caught)

Bike
2:51:17 | 56 mi | 19.62 mph |

Performance Comments: I felt strong on my bike but did not wear my heart rate monitor. I probably pushed too hard on the first two hours which left me pretty tired for the last 18 miles into the wind. That said, I am real happy with my time here.
What Would You Do Different? Wear heart rate monitor to help pace myself along with speed. Cramped on run due to something I did on my bike and I’m trying to figure it out, probably ate too much.

Performance Comments: Very smooth, was happy with this transition. I could have saved time with quick laces!
What Would You Do Different? Practice with and use pull laces.

Run
1:58:56 | 13.1 miles | 9:04 min/mi |

Performance Comments: What can you say, I learned a lot. Very good times for first 6 miles, I then cramped up and died. Thought walking a drink station would help but only lead to more walking. Very disappointed with run performance as it is supposed to be my strength.
What Would You Do Different? Wear heart rate monitor, do a better job with nutrition.
Post Race Activities and Cool Down: Started to rain, ate some food and got out of the area. Headed back to the campground with the other Smith Sports Triathletes!
Event Comments: Great event, I learned a ton about endurance races. Happy with results especially this being my first one. It was a blast to be there with a team and everyone’s friends and family were awesome support. Ali had me very well prepared for this race, it would have been very ugly without her coaching!
Would You Do This Race Again? Not a question, I will without a doubt!
